AFF_2012_2 Armed Forces Thanksgiving Dinner, 2012
November 13, 2012

Once again we sponsored a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner at Bethesda Naval Medical Center, now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.  We served a "home cooked Thanksgiving Dinner " for approximately 150 people.  Most of those served dinner were members of our Armed Forces who will have to spend the Holiday in the hospital. Many of these wounded warriors had their families visiting, and were therefore able to have a Holiday dinner together.

Armed Forces Thanksgiving Dinner, 2010

November 22, 2010

Vanguard was honored to again host a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner for more than 200 soldiers and their families at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center. We never lose sight of the generosity of our staff as well as our clients and colleagues. Even during a year that has been economically challenging for many, the outpouring of support from everyone allowed us to meet our own expectations of delivering a Class A meal, and creating an inviting atmosphere in the dining hall.

Community Improvement Day 2010
October 2nd, 2010

On October 2nd, 2010, nearly 500 volunteers came out in support of DCBIA's 18th Annual Community Improvement Day, and helped add 15,000 trees and plants, as well as aesthetic features, to the Metropolitan Branch Trail located in Ward 5's Edgewood neighborhood.  See local Channel 5's coverage of the day's events here.

An otherwise damp and rainy week made way for a gloriously sunny Saturday on October 2nd, bringing nearly 500 volunteers to DC's Edgewood neighborhood in Ward 5, for the DCBIA's 18th Annual Community Improvement Day.  Without the volunteer efforts of particpating companies and their employees, the project would have cost over $750,000...

From Edgewood to the Edge of the World

“Basically, as the title of the wall means, we would like people to step beyond their own personal boundaries.”
~ Peter Krsko, 30, director of Albus Cavus

Over a three week period in August, five artists and 40 apprentices from the city's Summer Youth Employment Program spray-painted a two story crumbling retaining wall behind Rhode Island Avenue Shopping Center in Northeast Washington.  Spanning the length of a city block, what was once ignored by Red Line commuters will be seen as a vibrant streak across a familiar landscape leading to the Rhode Island Avenue Metro stop. Those on foot, who live in or pass through the Edgewood neighborhood ...

event-meet-met MEET the MET
June 5, 2010

On June 5, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy celebrated National Trails Day by hosting an event with Kaiser Permanente on the Metropolitan Branch Trail. The event, called Meet the Met: Party on the Met Branch Trail, introduced surrounding communities to a new pathway that had opened only one month before. While some area residents had been involved with the long history of getting the trail built, many in the surrounding neighborhoods didn't know that the trail existed. By working with our partners to host a celebration that included something for and from all parts of the community - free bike repairs and rentals, garden plantings and performances by the cheerleaders from nearby Beacon House - we hoped to christen the trail and introduce it to all of Northeast D.C.

Armed Forces Thanksgiving Dinner, 2009
November 18, 2009

Vanguard provided Thanksgiving Dinner for more than 250 soldiers and their families at Bethesda Naval Medical Center.  We were prepared for the emotions that would potentially be stirred up while trying, humbly, to say thank you to our country's heroes.  What we weren't prepared for was the outpouring of generosity from so many people and businesses in our community.  We couldn't have produced such a successful event without their help and support.
